what i'm wearing

red ribbed jumpsuit from boohoo

Despite the utter seriousness portrayed by yours truly in these photographs, this post is anything but stern, only light, I promise. I write to express what I feel at the time, thoughts or issues that have been playing circles on my mind for a while, the demeanour tends to be not sad, but not overly cheerful either. I tend to take fragile outlooks, a struggle or an aspect that I can then turn then into something encouraging and optimistic. It's easier to compose the darker, more difficult things, the melancholic, into a bunch of sentences, even if there's not a comprehendible way to articulate it, you can still ramble into great depths about the topic. You wonder why heartbreak is so common in literature; poetry and songwriting for example, but then you also get it, it's easy to write about, even though the hurt or love may not be, you still find endless ways to speak of it.

I've been combing through the far corners of my head lately to find the words to associate with this post, I took these photographs on a whim, the light was too good to not play with, like most of us say, that warm afternoon light can make any shot look exquisite. You can say I was pretty damn happy with the outcome, that I now photograph in this setting whenever I get the chance. Throughout taking them, the warmth tingled my skin, the light burned my eyes but warmed my heart, I know that's pretty fucking profound for a mere beam of light slipping between my blinds and overheating my room, but it's the modest shit like that which for a moment, reminds us...

gratitude

In an overly materialistic world, there can be seen a lack of appreciation and thanks, overtaken with too much greed and selfishness. We all know an abundance of money could never fully satisfy us, it'd only ever ensure us the comfort of stability, we're an anxious world focusing aggressively on the future, burning out our time in the present, but when shit hits the fan, it's down to who you have and your mindset. Being full of gratitude and taking time to practice it daily, impacts your life in subtle but cosmic ways. I've spent too much time dwelling on the negatives no matter how small or big the issue, this by no means meant I was ungrateful, only that it's just easier to sulk upon what's not right, rather than just being content with the present, because you know there's a future.

“Be grateful for what you already have while you pursue your goals. If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more.” - Roy T. BennettThe Light in the Heart

Having moments of gratitude, has made me feel lighter mentally; it can drown out unnecessary worries and over-thoughts, bringing myself more balance and a clear mindset for the present, which at the end of the day only helps me prepare and work better towards the near future. You feel refreshed with the influx of positivity that subconsciously ignites within you; your attitude that you then put out there, will reflect what you may get back, which should only be optimistic.

“Those with a grateful mindset tend to see the message in the mess. And even though life may knock them down, the grateful find reasons, if even small ones, to get up.”
Steve MaraboliLife, the Truth, and Being Free

So, I'm grateful for the change in the seasons, they're pretty to watch; the walks with my best friend, and hot coffee and tea; for my family, their support and love is undying, for the kindness of strangers I pass on the streets; the brave individuals opening up to voice the truth, the communities marching for change and all that is right; for the art that is centuries old still hanging for all of us to see, for the roof over my head and all the books there are for me to read. For everything, I am grateful.

with love, Kat
