Brela, Makarska Riviera: Discover Croatia's Hidden Gem

Crystal waters, pine forests and Adriatic charm — Brela is the kind of place that quietly steals your heart.

After flying into Split Saint Jerome Airport, the exhaustion was starting to creep in, as the heat prickled my skin and hunger cried, we hit traffic - it was barely moving and I was barely staying awake. Then, somewhere beyond Split, the landscape opened up. The crowds thinned, the roads became quieter, and the scenery unfolded into a breathtaking mix of mountains, pine forests and endless Adriatic views. Winding coastal roads hugged the cliff-sides, revealing one spectacular vista after another, while the sea shimmered in shades of blue beneath the afternoon sun. It was my first glimpse of the natural beauty that makes this corner of Croatia so unforgettable.

As you make your way through the rugged mountains and near the shoreline, you meet the Dalmatian Coast, where Croatia's natural beauty truly shines, with sparkling Adriatic waters, hidden coves and dramatic mountain landscapes creating a picture-perfect setting.

Tucked away along this remarkable coastline lies Brela, a picturesque seaside town that perfectly captures the region's charm. Combining crystal-clear waters, peaceful beaches and stunning natural surroundings, it quickly became one of my favourite places on the Makarska Riviera.

The slow pace of life here feels increasingly rare.

It's a reminder that not every moment needs to be planned, documented or optimised. To stop worrying about whether you're seeing enough, doing enough or making the most of every second, and instead simply enjoy where you are. Sometimes the greatest luxury is allowing yourself to be still.

While many come for the serene, crystal-clear waters, Brela has plenty to offer beyond the shoreline. Backed by the impressive Biokovo Mountains and overlooking the Adriatic, it's a wonderful place to explore. Whether it's a leisurely stroll along the coast, a hike into the hills or a scenic cycle through the surrounding landscape, there are countless walking and cycling routes to choose from.
