5 Habits I'm Taking Into The New Year

I'm not big on resolutions and in recent years I have stopped making them. The pressure they cause throughout the year and potential disappointment at the end, is easily avoided by simply ignoring the need to make any and just letting things be. However habits are different and I've found them to be fundamental to a healthy growth in life and also keeping me stay somewhat sane along the way.

If there's anything I've learnt over the years, especially this year, is that life will really throw things your way no matter what and you can never prepare yourself for it. It's been a hard year and it's been so important for me to practice better habits and build up strength mentally. Now we're here at the end of it, I'm definitely ready for a re-set and feel encouraged to lay down some mindful practices to help me throughout the fresh start.

1. BodyMovement

A typical habit people talk about in the New Year, however due to ill health I've not been able to properly do any kind of fitness for nearly 5 months, not only physically but mentally that has been tough. Those endorphins released during fitness, however small the act, really do make a difference and help boost your mood, lower stress and just enhance your general wellbeing. Long walks in the fresh air, pilates + yoga will be a consistent practice for me going into the New Year for sure; I've missed them terribly when being bed bound.

2. Mindset - Letting Things Be

I spend so much time worrying and stressing which in that time of anticipation I exhaust myself and my body very much feels the effects. - I can't express enough how unwell you can make yourself due to stress. - I've learnt that whatever is going to be will not change whether you spend the time in between in a state of worry or not and at the end of the day I'd rather use that time positively and feel ok.

3. Personal Growth - Reading

Not for everyone, but I wholeheartedly encourage it. I ended up reading a hell of a lot in '24, if you know, you know. And it has really been the best thing, to escape from reality, to decompress mentally. It obviously is a much better way to spend your evening before sleeping, without being blinded by a screen.

4. Health - Balanced Diet & 2l of Water

Ok, of course we always want to be and try to look after our health, I suppose after the year I've had with my health compromised it's really put things in perspective. It's a very saturated market for wellness these days, there's an overwhelming amount of misinformation and lack of proper education regarding basic health. I'm not looking for any diets, or fancy quick fixes, I just want to focus on a good balanced diet, where I can just simply enjoy and appreciate food.

5. Self Care

I am really looking forward to prioritising and also indulging in Self Care habits. Especially in the evenings, making sure my environment is calm and safe, taking indulgent baths with gorgeous products, spending extra time doing skincare - think facial massages, a detox mask - ah lovely. Also to really get a good sleep routine going; we spend so much of our lives asleep, but we don't always focus on the quality of our nights, so that is a huge priority for me!
